The plan was to invite an international artist, but the pandemic made travel to Japan—and even within Japan—impossible. Determined to continue, Studio The Future decided to adapt the residency rather than postpone it. Instead of inviting artists to the island, the focus shifted toward collaboration with the people of Ojika, creating new work together from a distance.

The team centered the project on individual memory and personal perspective, developing three interconnected works based on input from local residents. The first was a video project, for which Studio The Future asked people from Ojika to film their favorite places and things they wanted to share with the world. The resulting piece sought to communicate the island’s character at a time when the world felt isolated and disconnected.

For the second work, residents were invited to contribute two kinds of letters: one written by an elder, recalling a deep personal memory, and another by a younger islander, expressing a hope for the future. These letters were read on camera and became part of a video collage created by Studio The Future.

In addition, Yuriko Miyazaki, an educator at the Nagasaki Prefectural Museum of Art, organized a postcard-making workshop involving participants across generations— from elementary and middle school students to high schoolers and residents of the local retirement home. Using images that represented the Netherlands in a realistic rather than stereotypical way, participants created postcards that offered their own interpretations of cultural exchange and imagination.

All the video works were made publicly available online, allowing people to engage with the project remotely, and were later shown in exhibitions in Japan and the Netherlands.
