In 2019, Studio The Future was invited to Ojika for the first time, marking the beginning of the Ojika Artist in Island program. Based on the theme of sea health, they organized a workshop with local residents to create life-sized sea monsters using marine debris collected from Ojika’s beaches. The project encouraged participants to reflect on the relationship between humans and the sea through collective making and imagination.

In parallel, Studio The Future created a book intended as a foundational text for future residencies—gathering local stories, observations, and myths that would continue to inspire later participants. They also developed a video installation composed of multiple screens, telling the stories of three Ojika legends: two drawn from local history and one newly written by Studio The Future.

Through this installation, they emphasized the connection between people and nature and the importance of shifting perspectives toward a more sustainable future. This first edition set the tone for the program’s ongoing dialogue between environment, community, and imagination.
